🌸“Behavior or Becoming? Rethinking Discipline” – Black Girlhood Unfolded

🌸“Behavior or Becoming? Rethinking Discipline”

To reduce mislabeling of developmentally typical behaviors as misconduct and address adultification bias in discipline decisions.

💬 Classroom Vignette: “The Eye Roll”

A teacher observes an eye roll after redirecting a student.

Initial interpretation: Disrespect.
Alternative interpretation: Frustration + emotional regulation learning.

Research shows Black girls receive harsher discipline for behaviors often overlooked in white peers (Epstein et al., 2017; Morris, 2016).

🌿 Reframing

Ask:

  • Would I respond differently if this student were perceived as younger or more innocent?
  • Is this behavior dangerous, disruptive, or developmental?
  • Am I responding to tone more than harm?
